David DePape, the man accused of attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband after invading their home with the intent of kidnapping and maiming her, has been charged by federal prosecutors with assault of an immediate family member of a U.S. official, with intent to retaliate against the official on account of the performance of duties, and attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official, reports Sadie Gudman for the Wall Street Journal.

In addition, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins also said her office charged Mr. DePape with state crimes, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, false imprisonment and threatening a public official or their family. He faces 13 years to life imprisonment on the state charges alone. The federal charges carry maximum sentences of 20 and 30 years, respectfully. According to Hannah Allam and Souad Mekhennet for the Washington Post, DePape’s radicalization unfolded over more than eight years and several different ideologies, moving from Green Party support and nudist activism to a hateful mix of racist, anti-Jewish and misogynistic rhetoric. Experts say Depape’s rhetoric indicates how today’s extremist threat complicates easy left-right categorization and enables trolls to exploit the messiness to push disinformation and justify violence.
