To the surprise of absolutely no one, George Santos announced his plan to run for re-election, figuring that he’s been out of the headlines long enough and that he likes having his own office and staffers. He hasn’t exactly done anything to improve his standing with voters – and as I’m writing these words, he’s still hitching himself to a whole array of unpopular legislation even when he’s staying out of the headlines. Democrats have yet to field a candidate running for his seat in a district that will likely start as a Democratic lean in the 2024 race, but until that time comes, there’s another good sign for Democrats that’s not so good for Santos.

In Santos’ first quarter as a congressman, he only managed to raise $5,300. This is in spite of, not because of, the local Republican Party whose leaders have already called on him to resign. Despite his regular efforts to emulate the former guy by wasting time on Twitter trolling comedians, his whole “own the libs” effort isn’t exactly going to plan, since he was once a curiosity of the news and now he’s pushed to the side due to crazier and more dangerous Republicans.

Make no mistake, the GOP has plenty of headaches going into 2024 with reckless candidates, and they don’t want Santos to be on the ballot in any form. The fact that he is very vulnerable to losing means that Democrats only need to flip three additional seats in order to win back the House. Let’s do that next November.
